Yarn bombing
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q579816 makes the claim that yarn bombing is associated specifically with Finland, and cites the Finnish Wikipedia as a source. I can't read Finnish, so I have no idea whether there is a solid citation here for that claim, but to say the least I have my doubts. The phenomenon is certainly common in the U.S., and the English-language Wikipedia has citations for the U.S. being the probable origin. Can someone follow this up? - Jmabel (keskustelu) 1. toukokuuta 2018 kello 02.06 (EEST)
- It looks like someone has now removed that claim from Wikidata, but you still may want to review the article here. - Jmabel (keskustelu) 1. toukokuuta 2018 kello 02.11 (EEST)
Disney is yet to give its upcoming streaming service an official name. The so-called "Disney Play" is a result of a reporter for Variety misinterpreting what Bob Iger said in a Disney telephone conference. (Variety have since corrected the article in question.)
I believe the article currently titled Disney Play here in the Finnish Wikipedia should be renamed either Disney Streaming Services LLC (the company that will operate the upcoming service) or a translation of "Unnamed Walt Disney Company streaming service" in Finnish.
Additionally, you may give a hatnote to the article that "Disney Play" was also a name of a video catch-up service operated by Disney Channel Scandinavia. JSH-alive (keskustelu) 8. lokakuuta 2018 kello 15.41 (EEST)

Translation request – Finnish to English
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hello! You all have a great article here about the Tampere conference of 1905 (Tampereen konferenssi 1905). At the moment, the English Wikipedia has nothing on this very interesting historical subject. I would really like to see this article translated into English. I asked on the English Wikipedia, and was told that this was the right place to find someone capable of such translation...is anyone up to the task? I can help with copyediting and English sources... [muokkaa wikitekstiä]User:บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย is a contributor based at the Thai Wikipedia who has created machine translations of articles and spamming them over a wide range of Wikipedia languages, including here. While the subjects of the articles he has created are (mostly) notable, the mistake of creating articles in languages he does not understand has led to extremely bad quality, probably at the level of unintelligibility. WMF bylaws amendments and upcoming call for feedback
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]The Board has discussed and approved some governance improvements in two recent meetings, on December 9 and January 8. As the governing body for the Wikimedia Foundation, the board wants to improve its capacity, performance, and representation of the movement’s diversity. It has amended the Bylaws in support of that goal.
Please check the details in the announcement published on Meta-Wiki. If you have any questions relating this, please feel free to ask, I'll be here to answer. Thank you very much and all the best, DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 22. tammikuuta 2021 kello 13.26 (EET)
Hi again!
Apologies as you are not reading this message in your native language. Please help out in translating - thanks for this!
As reported before the WMF starts a Call for Feedback about community-and-affiliated seat selection processes, resulting from the recent approval of bylaws amendments. This call for feedback is going to start on Monday Feb 1 and will run until March 14.
Full information will be published on Monday at this page. You can already watch the page for changes (it's very basic currently) or wait for my extensive post on Monday. If you are a user of Telegram, you can receive updates in this Telegram group or join the discussion in this Telegram group. Furthermore we are organizing an office hour three times (for different time zones) on Tuesday, Feb 2 (see the basic page). There we will introduce the call for feedback and will be available for any questions and comments. We are welcoming the organization of conversations in any language and in any channel. If you want us to organize a conversation or a meeting for your wiki project or your affiliate, please contact us. Best regards, DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 27. tammikuuta 2021 kello 19.32 (EET)
Call for Feedback: Community board seats has started - Office hours today
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]A few weeks ago, the Wikimedia Foundation Board decided to increase the number of its members from 10 to 16 seats in order to better distribute its workload and to allow for more diversity in its composition. But the question of how exactly the future election procedure for the community members of the board is to be designed remained open. On one hand, an election procedure that is as direct as possible for the communities is of great importance, but on the other hand, the current election procedure raises the question of how all those parts of the communities that have been underrepresented up to now can find themselves represented in the board. This is of particular importance because both the three existing community seats and the three newly created community seats will be up for (re)appointment in the course of the coming months.
The Board today launched a Call for Feedback yesterday to address this issue. In the course of this Call for Feedback different solutions for reshaping the election shall be discussed until March 14, some of them have already been submitted by the board as ideas, new ideas are welcome. More detailed information can be found on the meta page.
Voting systems? Yawn! some may think. But this is about the exact way the distribution of power from the community should be shaped in the future. Therefore I would like to invite you not only cordially, but also urgently ask you to participate.
Today, there will be a multilingual online meeting on this topic, hosted by Google Meet. We would like to inform you and discuss your feedback on the process and the suggestions and ideas. All details about this meeting can be found on the page First Office Hour in the Meta-Wiki. I would be happy to see you there. If that's too short notice for you - there will be more Office Hours as time goes on.
To ensure that as many voices and perspectives from the community are brought to bear on this as possible, the Board has assembled a global team to make this Call for Feedback effective. Thus, all materials will be translated by the team in a timely manner, announcements will not only be distributed by bots, but posted by responsible team members. Responses will be collected and published in weekly reports, and at the end of the Call for Feedback will be given to the board in aggregated form.
For all those interested, there are also additional information opportunities, such as two Telegram groups (one for announcements, one for discussion), more multilingual video conferences across all time zones, and last but not least, all team members actively reach out to groups in the community that have hardly participated in meta-discussions so far. In this way, we want to ensure that feedback from the broadest possible community, wherever it is expressed, reaches the board.
I look forward to your participation! DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 2. helmikuuta 2021 kello 18.12 (EET)
Community board seats - office hours with board members on Saturday
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]In January, the Wikimedia Foundation Board decided to change its structure. Thus, 6(!) of the now 16 seats on the board will be newly selected by the community this year. The Board is looking for a selection process ensuring more diversity and expertise within the board. The Board would like to gather extensive feedback from the community on this. To this end, there is a Call for Feedback, which is running from 1 February until 14 March. Here you can find detailed information.
In the course of this, many online conversations are held to discuss ideas and opinions on selection processes. A facilitation team collects the feedback, finally delivering a report for the board. Here you can find an overview of previous conversations and talks.
This Saturday, office hours will take place in the presence of board members, at 6 am, 10 am, 4 pm, and 9 pm (UTC). This hopefully enables everyone to take part and to address questions to board members. Here you can find all the information about it. I would like to invite you to these conversations and would be happy to meet you there. DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 18. helmikuuta 2021 kello 19.39 (EET)
Sunday talk - Community board seats
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]About three weeks ago, the Call for Feedback:Community seats on the Board began, with the Wikimedia Foundation Board asking the community what a redesign of the upcoming elections for the now six community seats on the Board should look like. Since then, in addition to seven Office Hours, far more than 50 regional discussion rounds have taken place worldwide, as well as numerous discussions on Wiki. With this interim balance, the Call for Feedback is now entering its second half.
The feedback on the various proposals of the Board and from the community was as diverse as the participants. For the third time, the facilitation team has presented its Weekly report, which summarises the current feedback. For those who would like an overview of the discussions to date, here is a list of links to the detailed reports.
Overall, the process so far has revealed several areas of focus that will be given greater attention in the second half of the Call for Feedback, namely:
- regional quotas
- candidates' skills
- vetting of candidates
- connecting the board elections, the Global Council and regional hubs.
And there is a new idea from the community to be discussed too: Candidate resources!
In order to present the ideas and also in view of these upcoming discussions, I would like to invite you to an online roundtable. This is an opportunity to present and discuss the ideas so far, to discuss possible new ideas with each other and to think through the possible key issues.
This round table will take place on Sunday, 28 February at 7:00 pm (UTC +1). We will meet via Google Meet (anonymous participation possible), just click this link: https://meet.google.com/zcu-vkdr-hze See you on Sunday! DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 26. helmikuuta 2021 kello 15.21 (EET)

Call for Feedback --> WMF Board elections
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Dear all,
About two weeks ago, the Call for Feedback: Community Board seats came to an end. For six weeks, the Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees engaged in conversations with communities to explore ways to hold the next Board elections.
A wide range of opinions was gathered through 99 rounds of discussion and hundreds of contributions on discussion pages, resulting in the final report. After two weeks of community review, this report has now been delivered to the Board.
Based on this report, the Board will decide on April 15 how and when to hold elections to fill the six community seats. For more information: The Final Report is available here, the index of underlying individual reports here.
And a new phase of the facilitation team's work begins - supporting the Elections Committee in the preparation of elections. One thing is certain: as only about 10 percent of all eligible voters participated in the 2015 and 2017 elections, one goal is to significantly increase voter turnout. More voters are the way to go. And working with the communities in this is a priority - further details will follow soon. DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 4. huhtikuuta 2021 kello 00.13 (EEST)
WMF - Päätöslauselma tulevista hallituksen vaaleista / Resolution about the upcoming Board elections

Hei kaikki,
Wikimedia Foundationin hallitus ilmoitti viime viikolla suunnitelmista vuoden 2021 hallituksen vaaleille. Moderaattoriryhmän tehtävänä on:
- Tiedottaa yhteisölle hallituksen vaaleista.
- Vaaleihin osallistumisen mainostaminen
DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 3. toukokuuta 2021 kello 14.32 (EEST)
WMF:n hallituksen vaalit - ehdokaskutsu
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hei kaikki,
Vuoden 2021 hallituksen vaalit ovat pian edessä. Yhteisöstä tarvitaan ehdokkaita täyttämään vapaita paikkoja.
Wikimedia Foundationin hallitus valvoo Wikimedia Foundationin toimintaa. Yhteisön luottamushenkilöt ja nimitetyt luottamushenkilöt muodostavat hallituksen. Kukin luottamushenkilö toimii kolmen vuoden toimikauden ajan. Wikimedia-yhteisöllä on mahdollisuus äänestää yhteisön luottamushenkilöitä.
Sitoutuminen
Luottamushenkilöiden toimikausi on kolmivuotinen, ja he voivat toimia enintään kolme peräkkäistä kautta. Työpanos on noin 150 tuntia vuodessa, matkoja lukuun ottamatta. Tämä aika ei jakaudu tasaisesti koko vuodelle. Aika keskittyy kokouksiin. Luottamushenkilöiden odotetaan työskentelevän vähintään yhdessä hallintoneuvoston valiokunnista.
Vaatimukset
Hallituksen työkieli on englanti.
Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections is now open
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on 7 February 2022.
With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.
There are two confirmed questions that will be asked during this Call for Feedback:
- What is the best way to ensure more diverse representation among elected candidates? The Board of Trustees noted the importance of selecting candidates who represent the full diversity of the Wikimedia movement. The current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Europe.
- What are the expectations for the candidates during the election? Board candidates have traditionally completed applications and answered community questions. How can an election provide appropriate insight into candidates while also appreciating candidates’ status as volunteers?
There is one additional question that may be presented during the Call about selection processes. This question is still under discussion, but the Board wanted to give insight into the confirmed questions as soon as possible. Hopefully if an additional question is going to be asked, it will be ready during the first week of the Call for Feedback.

Updates on the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines Review
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hello everyone,
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees released a statement on the ratification process for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) Enforcement Guidelines.
The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a baseline of acceptable behavior for the entire movement. The UCoC and the Enforcement Guidelines were written by volunteer-staff drafting committees following community consultations.
The revised guidelines were published 24 January 2022 as a proposed way to apply the policy across the movement. There is a list of changes made to the guidelines after the enforcement draft guidelines review. Comments about the guidelines can be shared on the Enforcement Guidelines talk page on Meta-wiki.
To help to understand the guidelines and process, the Movement Strategy and Governance (MSG) team will be hosting Conversation Hours on 25 February 2022 at 12:00 UTC, and 4 March 2022 at 15:00 UTC. Join the conversation hours to speak with the UCoC project team and drafting committee members about the updated guidelines and voting process.
The timeline is available on Meta-wiki. The voting period is March 7 to 21. All eligible voters will have an opportunity to support or oppose the adoption of the Enforcement guidelines, and share why. See the voting information page for more details.
Many participants from across the movement have provided valuable input in these ongoing conversations. The UCoC and MSG teams want to thank the Drafting Committee and the community members for their contributions to this process.
Sincerely, DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 11. helmikuuta 2022 kello 13.01 (EET), Movement Strategy and Governance
Correction to Smoky Dawson Wikipedia article
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hello, can a fluent Finnish speaker please make a correction to the article about the Australian country music singer Smoky Dawson? He did indeed perform in Nashville, but he never performed at the Grand Ole Opry ... and this is a very serious error indeed. I don't know much about the subject but to me it's basically like saying that a sportsperson whose biggest achievement in reality was winning a provincial championship won an Olympic gold medal!I can't figure out how to make the correction because of Finnish's vastly different grammar compared to English. Please see the talk page conversation about this on the English Wikipedia. Thanks! Graham87 (keskustelu) 13. helmikuuta 2022 kello 13.30 (EET)
- Correction made. Originally it was a translation of en.wikipedia's article and without references, so it was easy to delete the Grand Ole Opry. Regards --Abc10 (keskustelu) 13. helmikuuta 2022 kello 13.39 (EET)
- Thanks, yes, I thought as much. I've made this more minor correction myself, with the assistance of Wiktionary ... hope I did it alright. The original English article had quite a few problems. Graham87 (keskustelu) 13. helmikuuta 2022 kello 15.08 (EET)
- It is ok. I made some language correction to the original Finnish text which was not very good. Sources needed, maybe someone other than me... --Abc10 (keskustelu) 13. helmikuuta 2022 kello 16.13 (EET)

The Community Affairs Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees would like to thank everyone who participated in the recently concluded community vote on the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC).
The volunteer scrutinizing group has completed the review of the accuracy of the vote and has reported the total number of votes received as 2,283. Out of the 2,283 votes received, a total of 1,338 (58.6%) community members voted for the enforcement guidelines, and a total of 945 (41.4%) community members voted against it. In addition, 658 participants left comments with 77% of the comments written in English.
We recognize and appreciate the passion and commitment that community members have demonstrated in creating a safe and welcoming culture that stops hostile and toxic behavior, supports people targeted by such behavior, and encourages good faith people to be productive on the Wikimedia projects.
Even at this incomplete stage, this is evident in the comments received. While the Enforcement Guidelines did reach a threshold of support necessary for the Board to review, we encouraged voters, regardless of which way they were voting, to provide feedback on the elements of the enforcement guidelines that they felt needed to be changed or fixed, as well as why, in case it seemed advisable to launch a further round of edits that would address community concerns.
Foundation staff who have been reviewing comments have advised us of some of the emerging themes, and as a result we have decided as Community Affairs Committee to ask the Foundation to reconvene the drafting committee and to undertake another community engagement to refine the enforcement guidelines based on the community feedback received from the recently concluded vote.
For clarity, this feedback has been clustered into 4 sections as follows:
- To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the training;
- To simplify the language for easier translation and comprehension by non-experts;
- To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
- To review the conflicting roles of privacy/victim protection and right to be heard.
Other issues may emerge during conversations, and particularly as the draft Enforcement Guidelines evolve, but we see these as the primary areas of concern for voters and are asking staff to facilitate review of these issues. After further engagement, the Foundation should re-run the community vote to evaluate the revamped Enforcement Outline to see if the new document is then ready for its official ratification.
Further, we are aware of the concerns with the note 3.1 in the Universal Code of Conduct Policy. We are directing the Foundation to facilitate a review of this language to ensure that the Policy meets its intended purposes of supporting a safe and inclusive community, without waiting for the planned review of the entire Policy at the end of year.
Again, we thank all who participated, thinking about these critical and difficult challenges and contributing to better approaches across the movement to working together well. DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 15. huhtikuuta 2022 kello 22.58 (EEST)

Next steps on the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) Enforcement Guidelines
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hello all,
I’d like to share an update on the work on the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct.
In 2022 May, the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) project team completed a report on the 2022 March ratification vote about the guidelines. Voters cast votes from at least 137 communities. At least 650 participants added comments with their vote. A report is available on Meta-Wiki. (See full announcement)
Following the vote, the Community Affairs committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees asked that several areas be reviewed for improvements. A Revision Drafting Committee will refine the enforcement guidelines based on community feedback.
To help the Revisions committee, input from the community is requested. Visit the Meta-wiki pages (Enforcement Guidelines revision discussions, Policy text revision discussions) to provide thoughts for the new drafting committee. (See full announcement)
Let me know if you have any questions about these next steps. DBarthel (WMF) (keskustelu) 31. toukokuuta 2022 kello 16.22 (EEST)
Propose statements for the 2022 Election Compass
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hi all,
Community members in the 2022 Board of Trustees election are invited to propose statements to use in the Election Compass.
An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/disagree/neutral). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.
Here is the timeline for the Election Compass | ||
---|---|---|
July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass
July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements July 23 - August 1: Volunteers vote on the statements August 2 - 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements August 15: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision |
The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August. The Elections Committee will oversee the process, supported by the Movement Strategy and Governance team. MSG will check that the questions are clear, there are no duplicates, no typos, and so on.
Best,
Movement Strategy and Governance

WMF - Board elections 2022 - Vote for Election Compass Statements
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hi all,
With the end of the phase of pre-selection by the affiliates, the preparations for election by the community in the Board Election 2022 are now starting. This includes the Election Compass, a voting advice tool. All community members are invited to participate in voting for the proposed statements for the Election Compass. You can vote on Meta-Wiki for statements you would like to see in it.
The Election Compass is a tool that helps voters choose the candidates who most closely match their opinions and beliefs. To do this, community members previously suggested statements. The candidates will answer the 15 statements rated highest using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree) and their answers will be uploaded to the Election Compass. Later, voters use the tool by entering their own answers to the statements (agree/disagree/neutral) and the Election Compass then shows those candidates who most closely match the voter's opinions and beliefs.
Voting on the statements is open until 1 August. Here is the link:

Delay of the 2022 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election - Vuoden 2022 Wikimedia Foundationin hallituksen vaalien lykkääminen
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hi all,
I am reaching out to you today with an update about the timing of the voting for the Board of Trustees election.
As many of you are already aware, this year we are offering an Election Compass to help voters identify the alignment of candidates on some key topics. Several candidates requested an extension of the character limitation on their responses expanding on their positions, and the Elections Committee felt their reasoning was consistent with the goals of a fair and equitable election process.
To ensure that the longer statements can be translated in time for the election, the Elections Committee and Board Selection Task Force decided to delay the opening of the Board of Trustees election by one week - a time proposed as ideal by staff working to support the election.
Although it is not expected that everyone will want to use the Election Compass to inform their voting decision, the Elections Committee felt it was more appropriate to open the voting period with essential translations for community members across languages to use if they wish to make this important decision.
The voting will open on August 23 at 00:00 UTC and close on September 6 at 23:59 UTC.
Best regards,
Matanya, on behalf of the Elections Committee

[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Hello everyone,
The Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines Revisions committee is requesting comments regarding the Revised Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period will be open from 8 September 2022 until 8 October 2022.
The Committee collaborated to revise these draft guidelines based on input gathered from the community discussion period from May through July, as well as the community vote that concluded in March 2022. The revisions are focused on the following four areas:
- To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the UCoC training;
- To simplify the language for more accessible translation and comprehension by non-experts;
- To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
- To review the balancing of the privacy of the accuser and the accused
The Committee requests comments and suggestions about these revisions by 8 October 2022. From there, the Revisions Committee anticipates further revising the guidelines based on community input.
Find the Revised Guidelines on Meta, and a comparison page in some languages.
Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome comments in any language on the Revised Enforcement Guidelines talk page. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at local discussions, or during conversation hours. There are a series of conversation hours planned about the Revised Enforcement Guidelines; please see Meta for the times and details.
The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large number of communities. If you do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations. Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee every two weeks. The summaries will be published here.
