Though a number of definitions of benchmarking exist within the literature, they all essentially share the same themes. Partovi (1994) suggests: Benchmarking is the search for the best industry practices which will lead to exceptional performance through the implementation of these best practices (p. 25). Spendolini (1992) describes benchmarking as: . . . a continuous, systematic process for evaluating the products, services and work processes for organizations that are recognised as representing best practices for the purpose of organizational improvement.
