Chamberlain ~ palvelija
[muokkaa wikitekstiä]Toisen kappaleen alussa sanotaan nyt: Leeuwenhoekin maineen noustessa hän sai vuonna 1660 paikan Delftin kaupungin raatimiesten palvelijana. Ei ehkä ihan paras käännös kutsua häntä palvelijaksi... Googlella löytyi tämmöinen lähde, virka on englanniksi Chamberlain of the Council Chamber of the Aldermen of Delft, joka sisälsi kyllä palvelijan hommia, mutta mielestäni tämä on harhaanjohtava suomennos.

Work for the Delft City Council
In 1660, Van Leeuwenhoek was appointed Chamberlain of the Council Chamber of the Aldermen of Delft, with a starting salary of 314 guilders a year (about €2,800 today). His responsibilities included the maintenance of the Council Chamber in the Town Hall, and he served as a messenger during sit- tings. His contract specified his tasks in more detail. He was to open and close the chamber for meetings of the Sheriffs and Aldermen, maintain the fire (but any leftover coal was for his own use), keep the place clean and tidy, and light the candles. He was to show the gentlemen every respect and treat anything that he overheard during meetings as confidential. It is often suggested that this function was a sinecure. At any rate, we know that from 1699 Antoni had an assistant whose salary was paid by the city, one Arnold Ramp, who was probably given the practical tasks (cleaning, stoking the fire and lighting the candles). Van Leeuwenhoek continued as Chamberlain until his old age.
