Frank Chapman

Frank Michler Chapman (12. kesäkuuta 1864 West Englewood, New Jersey – 15. marraskuuta 1945 New York) oli yhdysvaltalainen lintutieteilijä.

Frank Chapmanin vanhemmat olivat lakimies Lebbeus Chapman Jr. ja Mary Augusta Parkhurst. Hän kävi Englewood Academya ja valmistui sieltä 16-vuotiaana. Hän liittyi American Exchange National Bank of New Yorkin henkilökuntaan 1880 ja erosi pankista 1886. Vuonna 1888 hän pääsi Joel Asaph Allenin apulaiseksi American Museum of Natural Historyyn New Yorkissa ja sai palkkaa 50 dollaria kuukaudessa. 1901 hänestä tuli museon nisäkäs- ja lintuosaston apulaisintendentti ja 1908 lintuosaston intendentti. 1920 hänet nimitettiin uuden lintuosaston johtajaksi, josta virasta hän jäi eläkkeelle 1942 palveltuaan museossa 54 vuotta.

Vuonna 1898 hän avioitui Fanny Bates Emburyn kanssa. Heille syntyi vuonna 1900 yksi lapsi, Frank Chapman Jr.

Brown University promovoi Chapmanin tohtoriksi 1913. Ensimmäisen maailmansodan aikana Chapman toimi Amerikan Punaisen ristin julkaisupäällikkönä. Kuuluisa joululintulaskenta (Christmas Bird Count) oli alun perin Chapmanin ideoima. Hän toimi American Ornithologists' Unionin puheenjohtajana ja hänet äänestettiin Kansallisen tiedeakatemian jäseneksi vuonna 1921.

Chapman nimesi lukuisia uusia lintulajeja ja alalajeja, muun muassa baudovuortentinamin (Crypturellus kerriae) ja juovatinamin (Crypturellus casiquiare). Hänen kunniakseen on nimetty silkkikiitäjä (Chaetura chapmani) ja rusosiipinapsija (Phylloscartes chapmani).

Chapman on haudattu Brooksiden hautausmaalle kotikaupunkiinsa Englewoodiin.
