English: December 1963 stamp issued on the occasion of the accession to independence ("Uhuru") of the Sultanate of Zanzibar. The stamp has been overprinted Jamhuri 1964 (Republic 1964) soon after the Revolution of January 1964 that put an end to more than 200 years of Arab rule on the island. Zanzibar united with the Republic of Tanganyika three months later.
Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah (cameo portrait), was overthrown after merely half a year after his accession as sultan.
